I’m setting up a new laptop for my parents, and honestly, they’re not the best at knowing what’s safe online. What’s a good “set it and forget it” malware/virus scanner I can get for them? Paid options are fine. They love playing those casino-style games on Facebook, so I want to make sure they’re as protected as possible from any malware. Any suggestions?
Windows laptops already have built-in protection for viruses and malware, so that should cover most of what they need. Just add uBlock Origin to their browser, and they’ll be set!
Don’t give them admin rights
Set up a separate admin user only you know the password to. Then add a new user for them and enable Windows Defender
Windows Defender is plenty!
Forget about viruses for a second, teach them about social engineering instead. Let them know there are no random gifts, awards, the government reaching out, or long-lost friends online. If anyone ever 1. Asks for personal info or 2. Asks for money, they should come to you first.
Can someone explain to me how to set up a account that doesn’t have admin rights maybe show me a link to YouTube
Stick with windows defender, consider possibly not giving them admin accounts or better yet, educate them to not just accept every pop-up they see and to be skeptical. Teach them what the real risks are. Older people are just older, they aren’t dumb, just often unfamiliar with tech.
Windows Defender is fine in my experience
