Hey there… I do some hobbyist video editing on the side and wanted to see if there’s a better or lighter software out there that I should be using.
Right now, I’m just editing home videos with vacation footage from my GoPro in 1080p/60fps. I mainly trim and splice clips and add some MP3 music over them. I don’t use the original sound; they end up being long travel music videos, usually around 10-20 minutes.
I’ve been using the free version of DaVinci Resolve on my laptop, which is decent, but it feels a bit too heavy for what I need. My laptop struggles with it sometimes, and the footage can get choppy unless I use Optimized Media.
I’m wondering if there’s something lighter or even a mobile app that might work better. I’ve heard people mention CapCut as being surprisingly good.
My main requirements are that I need to splice to specific fractions of a second, output in 1080p (I usually watch the videos on my TV via USB with my wife and family), and have some basic protections against losing my project while I’m working on it (sometimes I drag it out for weeks or months).
Oh, and I have a GoPro Quik app cloud subscription. I feel like I should probably ditch it since I also have a Google One account, but I like the quick uploads during vacations and having an extra cloud storage option. I’ve never really used GoPro’s editing tools or pulled videos from that service, but maybe I could make better use of it.
