I’m looking for an ePub reader for my Windows 11 PC, but every time I try to download one, I get a warning that the app might be “harmful to my device.” Is this just Windows complaining because they don’t benefit from me downloading other software, or is there an actual risk? Anyone have a safe ePub reader suggestion for Windows 11?
I have always loved Sumatra PDF for its simplicity.
Yeah, Sumatra PDF, it supports EPUB, MOBI and Djvu files, besides PDF.
Sumatra has very limited formatting options, and most of the time it just ignores the embedded formatting in ePub files.
It’d be helpful if you mentioned what apps you’ve already tried and where you downloaded them from.
Calibre is a FOSS ebook manager (like iTunes for books) that can also sync to devices like Kindle or Nook.
Google Books lets you upload files (PDF, ePub, etc.) and read them on the web or through apps on your phone or tablet. It syncs your progress across devices, but it’s not available everywhere.
If you prefer to keep everything local and organized, go with Calibre. If you want to read across multiple devices, go with Google Books.
I found Aquile Reader and actually like it, even though it’s an app and not a traditional installable program. The free version works well for me, but they do offer a premium version too. I haven’t tried it, so not sure what extras it offers. You might end up liking it too!
Sumatrapdf can also read ebooks.
STDU Viewer, can handle pretty much anything you want to throw at it from ebooks to CBR/CBZ.
Try Sumatra PDF or Balabolka if you need some text-to-speech (TTS) features.
Balabolka can use more natural-sounding voices now, way better than the old Microsoft David ones
No one’s talking about the Kindle app? You can email it different formats to Amazon, and they’ll convert it for you. But honestly, Calibre is by far the easiest option.
Besides Calibre, I’ve also used a Firefox plugin to open EPUBs right in my browser.
