I was downloading VLC and noticed that the portable version is only offered in 32-bit, which got me thinking—most, if not all, of the portable versions of programs I’ve downloaded seem to be 32-bit.
Can portable versions not be 64-bit? If they can, why are most portable versions only offered in 32-bit?
That’s a good point! It’s weird, right? Most portable apps seem stuck in the 32-bit world. I guess it’s easier for developers to manage and it works fine for most people. But yeah, it’d be nice to have more 64-bit options for those who need them.
Yeah, portable versions can definitely be 64-bit. A lot of modern apps are built to use the extra power and memory that come with 64-bit systems.
However, the primary reasons why most portal versions are offered in 32-bit is because of compatibility, portability and ease of development.
